There has been an increase in the use of alkaline water for one’s health benefits The use of the alkaline water is important when for a number of factors, including improving one’s immunity, fighting the ageing process and treating chronic illnesses.

A number of brands for alkaline water are available right now and they are easily affordable. Full of healthy and essential minerals, they are the best that one can hope to get. Some of them are high in quality as they offer the same minerals found in natural spring water, along with medical options that are found in the same water. When it comes to water without harmful fluoride, naturally filtered alkaline water is also the best choice that one can make.

Most alkaline water system is an efficient one that only needs a filter change once a year. Generally, the water purifiers can deliver as much as 10 000 litres. There are usually family size machine that one can opt for to boosting one’s immunity.

The Benefits of Alkaline Water

For years, texts and videos have been circulating on the internet, suggesting that drinking alkaline water can cure or prevent almost any disease, and also prevent aging. There is even a doctor who categorically states that when it comes to pH levels, the elderly are “acidic”, while children are “basic”. According to this same doctor, the French researcher Alexis Carrel was able to keep a chicken heart beating – outside the body of the animal – for 27 years, by changing the liquid in which the heart was kept daily. This proves that age is determined by the environment, and not over time.

What is pH?

It is a measure of the acidity of a solution (“solution” is a type of mixture in which one or more substances, the solutes, dissolve in another, the solvent; the most common solvent on planet Earth is water). We don’t need to go into too much detail here. In a simplified way, the lower the pH is, the greater the acidity of the solution. An acidic solution is one that has a predominance of hydrogen ions (H +), and has a pH less than 7. Solutions with a pH greater than 7 have a predominance of hydroxide ions (OH-). It is helpful to know that human blood has a pH between 7.35 and 7.45, which means that our blood has a slight alkaline predominance.

If the pH of the blood is slightly alkaline, shouldn’t we drink water at the same pH to keep everything the same?

This idea doesn’t make any sense, because arterial blood is just one of the many components of our body, and each component has its own pH. The pH of our intestines is usually around 6 (acidic), the stomach is between 1.5 and 3.5 (very acidic), and the water we drink passes through both, before being absorbed into the blood.
